Things to do in Coptic Cairo

Coptic Cairo sits south of Islamic Cairo, near Fustat, and is best treated as its own stop rather than an add-on to the Citadel or Khan el-Khalili. Inside its walls: the Hanging Church, suspended over the old Roman gatehouse, the Ben Ezra Synagogue and the Coptic Museum, all within a compact, walkable perimeter of a few narrow lanes.

Many visitors still expect Egypt's royal mummies here or at the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square; they have been at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) in Fustat since the Pharaohs' Golden Parade in April 2021, while the Tahrir museum remains open with its own collection.

NMEC is close enough to pair with Coptic Cairo on the same day on foot.
