Things to do in Fayoum

Fayoum is not a stop on the White Desert circuit, and it does not need one: it is a separate, easier trip, roughly 90 minutes to 2 hours from Cairo, done as a half-day or full day without an overnight stay or a 4x4. The draw is water and scenery, not sand safaris.

Wadi El Rayan has lakes and waterfalls where families picnic and boats run short trips; Wadi Al-Hitan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005, holds fossil whale skeletons from when this desert was seabed; the pottery village of Tunis adds workshops and a slower pace.

Compare that to Bahariya and the White Desert, roughly 5 hours from Cairo and built around multi-day 4x4 trips with a night under canvas. Fayoum suits anyone short on time; the White Desert does not.
