Things to do in the White Desert and Bahariya

This is not a day trip from Cairo, whatever a badly worded listing might imply.

Reaching Bahariya oasis takes around five hours of driving each way, so the White Desert is sold as a multi-day 4x4 circuit, usually two or three nights, with a night camping among the chalk-white rock formations and a pass through the darker volcanic hills of the Black Desert en route.

Fayoum, by contrast, is doable and back in a single day without an overnight stop. Siwa lies further out again and belongs to its own separate, longer circuit, not this one. Pack for a real desert bivouac: daytime heat gives way to cold nights, so bring warm layers and drink water steadily throughout the drive and the camp.
